Aisle be back! My Life Learning students volunteer at Tesco

Here at My Life Learning we recognise how important it is that our learners get to develop vital life skills as they prepare for adulthood.

This month, nine of our students joined in a voluntary bag pack at Tesco in Hindley. A busy day was had by all as they bag packed at the checkouts, handed out pens to customers and stood at the entrance with their collection buckets.

The whole community experience was very positive and helped our learners develop valuable knowledge and skills that can be used in the workplace and will help to support the learners as they make their way out into the world.

We were really proud of the group, with some bravely conquering their initial worries and nerves to carry out their tasks. Every single member joined in and did their bit – they represented My Life impeccably!

Well done everyone! Until the next time…

My Life CEO Caroline Tomlinson features on BBC Breakfast TV

On Monday 18th February our very own CEO Caroline Tomlinson and her son Joe featured in a BBC Breakfast special report.

The news feature was a result of a BBC investigation into care at home for adults with learning disabilities.

Caroline was interviewed about her experience of having a personal budget for her son Joe and how his care works well via a team of personal assistants which they employ through a Direct Payment.

However, Caroline explained that more government investment is needed so that councils are able to fund people who need support appropriately. She stated that they hadn’t had an increase in their budget for over 10 years which makes recruitment and retention more difficult, especially for those with complex needs.

“We know that many families struggle with the ongoing complexities of employing your own staff and thinking about who will do this when I’m no longer around, which is why we set up My Life – to help make sure that people get the care and support they deserve,” said Caroline.

My Life rated ‘Good’ by CQC

We are absolutely delighted that our services have been rated as ‘Good’ in our first ever CQC inspection.

The inspection team met with our CEO Caroline and Operations Manager Tracey in August. As part of the inspection, they scruitinised all our systems and procedures to find out if we are safe, effective and well-led. Then on day two, they spoke with staff, members and parents to get an honest critique of our services.
The great news is that no issues were highlighted and we got really good feedback. But we’re not resting on our laurels. Even with a good rating, we know there’s always room for improvement!
